Thank you for your interest in the NSW Wrestling Japan Training Camp 2025. Please read the following information carefully before completing the application form.
Event Details: NSW Wrestling is excited to announce its third Japan Training Camp, scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, in first half of July 2025 (dates subject to minor changes). We will fly to Tokyo after Australian Nationals (which is on Sat 28 June and Sunday 29 June) for an intensive yet memorable internatinoal tournoment and training camp. Check this video from our previous training camp !
Get ready to compete and represent Australia: Similar to our successful trip in 2023 and 2024, this 8-10 day camp will host a team of 10 (or fewer) dedicated athletes from NSW who will participate in Japan Open tournoment and represent Team NSW Australia !
Training Camp: After the competition, our trip is followed by a 10 day training camp. The venue for the training camp will be at one of the most prestigous wrestling institutions in Japan and in the world. The training venue is currently under negotiation and will be confirmed with you in the upcoming weeks. We can promise you won't be dissapointed.
Financial Information: While NSW Wrestling covers the entire cost of the training camp and training facilities, athletes are required to contribute to other travel expenses, estimating a total out-of-pocket commitment of approximately $3000 or more. The expenses athletes are expected to cover include:
- Flights from Sydney to Tokyo
- 10-12 nights of accommodation (approximately $60 per night, with the option to share and reduce costs)
- Meals
- Travel insurance
- Other incidental travel costs
Participants are expected to book their flights with the team on certain dates, emphasizing that this is a training camp and not a tourist trip.
Code of Conduct: Maintaining the highest standards of behavior and good character is paramount to us. NSW Wrestling reserves the right to ask individuals to leave the camp at any point if there is misconduct or disrespect towards our officials, athletes and hosts.
What you can expect, and what we expect from you:
- The level of Japan open tournoment is high. While it often exclused the gold medalists in the country, it has some of the best wrestlers in Japan participating. We want to maintain our team's good reputation at the tournoment. We are looking for strong, competitive and well accomplished wrestlers !
- The training camp and the intensity of the traning sessions is exteremly high, and you will potentially be training alongside and under world and Olympic champions. On most days, you will be training 2 sessions per day (usually around total of 4 hours). Undrestandably we must be very selective on who can accept.
- To be considered you must already be ranked top 1-2 at the national level (in freestyle at senior or junior levels) along with being in excellent physical preparation.
- We take into consideration "Quality Over Quantitiy". We aim to go with a team of 10 or fewer athletes.
- This camp is available for NSW Wrestlig members only. However subject to availability and requirements for our team, we may consider elite-level athletes from other states at an additional cost (we cannot be able to cover some of your costs if you are not our member) in our 'reserve' spots.
- This camp is targetted towards 18+ athletes as the tournoment is a Seniors tournoment. However we may consider applicants under the age of 18 who are accompanied by a parent/guardian.
- Australian citizenship is NOT required. But you will have to make your own visa arrangements if required.
- Other selection criteria includes: Adherence to Japanese hosts' requirements regarding the number, age, skill level, and size of athletes. They want our team to be a good match with theirs.
Application Process:
- Filling out this form does not guarantee a spot, as we have strict skillset/age requirements and limited spots for this camp.
- All applicants undergo a rigorous selection process based on:
- Previous competition results from 2024.
- Upcoming competition results in early 2025 (NSW State Championships in February).
- Character assessment.
- Coach feedback.
